Altered shirt, bleach.
Created while living in the United States, Conform emerged from the artist's growing sense of distance from her Scottish identity. Through the gradual bleaching of a tartan shirt, a symbol closely associated with Scottish culture, the work reflects upon the desire to fit in and the subtle ways cultural identity can become diluted through adaptation and migration.
As the tartan fades, the garment becomes a metaphor for the tension between belonging and self-preservation. The work asks how much of ourselves we alter in order to be accepted, and what remains when familiar markers begin to disappear.
